It's time for an Organ Transplant!

Why Now?

• Old organ is failing. Many “stops” don’t work or work intermittently. Pedals usually work. Estimated cost of repair is $5,000 which is currently in the operating budget for 2023.
• We can continue investing in a 44-year-old organ with a limited life span, with continued repairs likely; or replace our organ.
• At the request of a concerned member, we investigated potential replacements for our organ. 

Our Research Revealed:

• Organs are designed to Lead Worship music: Organs support, enhance and encourage Worship. Organs are THE instrument for liturgical worship. 
• Our Lutheran Worship is centered on:
  • The Word
  • The Liturgy
  • The Hymnology
• We need to find a way to finance the purchase without impacting our operating funds – that means we need to raise the money through a capital campaign that will not impact our existing weekly giving.

A new organ is an investment in our church’s future Worship Experience

• This organ requires an investment of $69,000 (purchase, delivery, installation, new speakers, and taxes) and training sessions for our organist on the many new features of the new instrument.
• In addition, Pastor recommends that we start a dedicated contingency fund for an increased organist salary should we need to find a new organist. This would help finance an increased salary until our church and giving grows. Target is to create a $10,000 dedicated fund to support this. Total funds to be raised: $79,000.
• Since we would have a full warrantee, we would avoid the $5000 in the 2023 budget for repairs.

Funding Options/Ideas

• End of year giving is enhanced with year end bonuses for some. 
• Check with your tax advisor!
  • For those over 72 with IRAs or 401k accounts, year end RMDs (Required Minimum Distributions) provide tax-advantaged withdrawal from retirement funds, allowing for contributions to the Church rather than to the tax collector. 
  • Donate stock or mutual funds that have appreciated directly to the church and get a tax advantaged donation. KOK can accept these without your selling them.
  • Sell investments that have lost value to harvest losses, donate the proceeds
• Make sure your gift is dated in the year in which you wish to take advantage of the tax savings and is paid directly to the church (before coming into your own accounts.) Timing is everything.
• We need to fully fund the purchase through targeted giving that won’t impact operational budget. This is a CAPITAL project, not an operating budget item.

Capital Campaign to Finance a new Organ
There is a dedicated organ fund currently in place, which contributes to the  required $79,000. The remainder must be raised in this campaign.

• Today: Introduce the need and solicit Congregational support to purchase a new organ.
• December 12 - December 31: Congregation prayerfully considers individual ability to support the funding with a one-time gift, complete a pledge card, and date gift as appropriate.
• January 15: Pledge cards returned during service or received by the church Treasurer.
• January 17 week: Verify goal has been met, and if needed and if possible, address any shortfall.
• February 15: Collect contributions / fulfill pledges assuming goal has been met.
